Projections: Strong Titles Vie for Top Spot

22 Nov, 2010 By: John Latchem

Nov. 16 was an interesting week for new releases. In one corner is the new deluxe edition of the highest box office earner of all time, Avatar, which comes with three versions of the film and a slew of extras.

In another corner are an assortment of new releases on 3D Blu-ray which performed fairly well at the box office, most notably Paramount’s The Last Airbender ($131.6 million), Disney’s A Christmas Carol ($137.9 million) and Warner’s Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore ($43.6 million).

And lastly are strong holdovers such as Disney’s Toy Story 3 and Sony Pictures’ Grown Ups.

Given the hype and retail attention, the top spot could easily go to Avatar: Extended Collector’s Edition. However, if the title is affected by double-dip antipathy, expect Christmas Carol or Last Airbender to slide up the scale.
