Projections: 'Spider-Man' Powering Up

25 Aug, 2014 By: John Latchem

Sony Pictures' The Amazing Spider-Man 2 should easily top the sales and rental charts for the week ending Aug. 24. The sequel's $202.9 million domestic box office gross is the lowest of the franchise, but still represents one of the highest-grossing films to arrive on disc this year.

With most of the other new releases being minor theatrical performers, direct-to-video films and TV shows on disc, Lionsgate's Divergent should hold onto a top spot, most likely No. 2. Disney's Muppets Most Wanted could hold onto the No. 3 spot if it can overtake Cinedigm's God's Not Dead.

On the rental chart, Universal's Sabotage came off its 28-day holdback at Redbox and should claim a high spot.
