Projections: 'Sniper' Takes Aim at Disc Sales Chart

25 May, 2015 By: John Latchem

Warner's American Sniper, the top domestic box office earner among 2014 movies, should easily debut atop the home video sales charts the week ending May 24. The film, a Clint-Eastwood directed adaptation of late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle's autobiography, grossed an impressive $349.7 million in its run since its December released, though most of the earnings came this year. It's also the biggest new release on disc in a few weeks, which will knock Universal's Fifty Shades of Grey down a notch or two.

The dark horse is Paramount's Hot Tub Time Machine 2. The film bombed at the box office with just $12.3 million, but is the sequel to a cult hit film, which has all the earmarks of finding an audience on home video. That's probably the logic behind the studio's strategy of releasing the film via Digital HD and VOD very quickly after its brief theatrical run. The film is also tracking to debut as the No. 2 rental for the week.

The top rental is likely to be Fox's Taken 3, which comes off its 28-day holdback at Redbox.
