Projections: 'Smurfs' Shake Off Holiday Blues

5 Dec, 2011 By: John Latchem

Sony Pictures’ surprise hit The Smurfs, with a $142.3 million domestic box office, will try to displace Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 from its perch atop the sales chart.

Smurfs and Friends With Benefits, also from Sony, both received Friday releases, though the fewer days to contribute to the sales ranking usually doesn’t hurt new releases.

On the rental chart, Paramount’s Super 8 should have a strong second week. Warner’s Crazy, Stupid, Love. should get a bounce from the end of its Redbox embargo.
