Projections: 'Retreat' Should Beat Time Travel

15 Feb, 2010 By: Kelly Burner

Two romance-themed theatrical hits are going head-to-head for the week ending Feb. 14, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Feb. 9 Universal released its comedy Couples Retreat, which earned nearly $110 million at the domestic box office. In the opposite corner, Warner came out with the romantic fantasy film The Time Traveler’s Wife ($63 million), based on the bestselling book of the same name.

Valentine’s Day will make consumers more likely to snatch up these movies. It will be a close call, but Couples Retreat should pull ahead with the victory on both the top rentals and the top sellers charts. Time Traveler’s Wife will snag second place.

Also released Feb. 9 was the comedy A Serious Man, also from Universal, which earned $9.2 million in domestic theaters and earned an Oscar nomination for best picture. This title, with luck, should land as high as fifth position on both charts for the week ending Feb. 14.
