Projections: Modest Slate of Newcomers Could Give 'Star Wars' Another Shot at No. 1

9 May, 2016 By: John Latchem

A number of modestly performing newcomers during the week ending May 8 could give a strong holdover another chance at the top spot on the disc sales chart.

The best bet is on Disney's Star Wars: The Force Awakens in its fifth week. The blockbuster was No. 1 its first two weeks and is still the centerpiece of many retail displays.

Also in the hunt is Fox's The Revenant, looking for a third consecutive week in the top spot. However, the title's retail footprint has been much diminished since its debut.

The top newcomers include Sony Pictures' The 5th Wave ($34.8 million at the domestic box office), Fox's Joy ($56.5 million) and Lionsgate's The Choice ($18.7 million).

On the rental chart, The 5th Wave is set to debut in the top spot, followed by The Choice.
