Projections: 'Mockingjay' Should Win the Day

9 Mar, 2015 By: John Latchem

Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 should easily top the home video charts the week ending March 8. Though the discs were released on a Friday instead of the traditional Tuesday, and thus have fewer days to impact the charts, the franchise is so mega-popular most sales take place in the first few days anyway. In addition, studios avoided releasing that many major new titles in the days leading up to the Mockingjay release.

Where the Friday release usually impacts performance is on the rental chart, though early trends on Redbox indicate Mockingjay will either top the rental chart or debut at No. 2.

The lack of high-impact new titles for the week other than Mockingjay is likely to result in Disney's Big Hero 6 dropping just a slot to No. 2, while Disney's direct-to-video Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast had the most shelf space of the March 3 releases, which should translate into a good sales debut.

On the rental chart, the bigest competitor to Mockingjay is Universal's Dracula Untold, which is coming off its 28-day holdback from Redbox.
