Projections: Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' Set for No. 1

1 Feb, 2010 By: Kelly Burner

Several theatrical titles hit DVD and Blu-ray Disc Jan. 26. Among the group was the concert film Michael Jackson’s This Is It ($72.1 million), from Sony Pictures, which features behind the scenes footage from the rehearsals of Michael Jackson’s sold-out comeback tour. Also released was Disney’s sci-fi thriller Surrogates ($38.6 million), starring Bruce Willis, and Lionsgate’s Saw VI ($27.7 million). Lastly is Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut Whip It ($13 million), a comedy from Fox starring Ellen Page.

Although concert films rarely are chart-toppers, Michael Jackson’s This Is It will surely be the exception. With almost twice the box-office power of Surrogates and an immense fan base, This Is It will likely debut as the No. 1 selling DVD and Blu-ray Disc for the week ending Jan. 31. However, there is a possibility that Surrogates will steal first place on the national rental charts.
