Projections: 'Martian,' 'Hotel Transylvania 2' Set to Dominate Charts

18 Jan, 2016 By: John Latchem

Fox's The Martian and Sony Pictures' Hotel Transylvania 2 are set to dominate the top spots on the home video charts the week ending Jan. 17.

The Martian earned more at the domestic box office, with $227 million compared with Hotel Transylvania 2's $169 million. And both should have a significant first-week home video audience, with Martian appealing to sci-fi and Ridley Scott fans and HT2 aiming for families.

On the rental chart, The Martian is subject to a 28-day holdback from Redbox rental kiosks, while Hotel Transylvania 2 is not, so HT2 should lead the rental chart. Universal's Ted 2 and Fox's Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials are coming off month-long kiosk delays and will also take some of the top rental chart spots.
