Projections: Latest ‘Twilight’ Should ‘Eclipse’ the Competition

6 Dec, 2010 By: John Latchem

The first two “Twilight” films were released on a Saturday and jumped to No. 1 on the charts, and it probably won’t be much different for the third film. Despite having only two days worth of sales to qualify for the charts the week ending Dec. 5, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse should have no trouble topping the national DVD sales chart.

In the race for No. 2, the highest-profile new release is 20th Century Fox’s actioner Knight and Day, a $76.4 million box office earner starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.

Disney has two big titles that also should place well. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice makes its debut on disc, but underperformed at the box office with just $63.2 million domestically. Given Disney’s success releasing catalog titles, its re-release combo of Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 may be the better performer of the two.

Eclipse’s late release will likely depress its first-week rental total, which could allow Apprentice to sneak up the rental chart.
