Projections: 'Independence Day: Resurgence' Expects to Invade Disc Charts

24 Oct, 2016 By: John Latchem

Fox's Independence Day: Resurgence is positioned to take over the top spot on the home video sales charts the week ending Oct. 23.

The sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day underperformed at the domestic box office with just $103.14 million, but is also the highest-profile new release of the week.

Another sequel to keep an eye on is Disney's Alice Through the Looking Glass, which earned a domestic haul of $77 million, less than a quarter of the earnings of its predecessor, 2010's Alice in Wonderland.

Looking Glass received decent placement at Walmart, which typically accounts for half of disc sales, but had a minor footprint at other chains compared with holdovers such as Sony Pictures' Ghostbusters: Answer the Call and Fox's Ice Age: Collision Course.

On the rental chart, the Ghostbusters remake arrived at Redbox kiosks a week late but should finally claim a top spot alongside Universal's Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and Free State of Jones, the latter of which came off a month-long Redbox holdback.
