Projections: 'Captain Phillips' Seeks No. 1 Berth

27 Jan, 2014 By: John Latchem

The top disc seller and rental for the week ending Jan. 26 should be Sony Pictures’ Captain Phillips, the docudrama about the pirate hijacking of the cargo ship Maersk Alabama that grossed $105.8 million in U.S. theaters. The film has significant awards-season buzz, including a best picture Oscar nomination.

Holdover The Butler, from Anchor Bay, maintains a strong retail presence and could land at No. 2.

Universal’s Machete Kills might generate some fanboy interest, but probably won’t make significant waves after earning just $8 million at the box office.
