Projections: 'Avengers' Will Dominate Disc Sales1 Oct, 2012 By: John Latchem
That Disney's DVD and Blu-ray release of Marvel's The Avengers will dominate the sales charts the week ending Sept. 30 is not the issue. The question is by how much.
The film, which grossed $622.9 million in U.S. theaters, is the only major new theatrical-to-disc release from Sept. 25, following a week of modest sales performances, which should pave the way for it to top the overall and Blu-ray sales charts by a wide berth (on the scale of something like 25-to-1 over the No. 2 title).
It could be a banner week for Avengers director Joss Whedon on home video. Lionsgate's The Cabin in the Woods, which he produced and co-wrote, will stick around the sales charts a bit longer and, with Avengers held back from rental outlets, could top the rental chart for a second consecutive week.
Universal's Battleship is coming off its kiosk embargo and should easily ride into one of the top three rental spots.
