Projections: 'Avengers,' 'Spy' Taking Over

5 Oct, 2015 By: John Latchem

History suggests Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron will be the top-selling disc the week ending Oct. 4, despite being a Friday release that limits its time on the market before the end of the tracking period. It's the type of title with the popularity and fanbase to drive huge first-day sales, possibly enough to overcome the full-week availability of another popular title, Fox's Spy.

Indeed, a scan of some stores on the Friday, Oct. 2 release date of Ultron showed that some Walmart stores, which typically account for half of disc sales, might not have had the expected copy depth of the superhero sequel than did Spy, which gives the action-comedy the edge.

While the week also featured a slew of other new releases, such as Warner's Entourage and Fox's Poltergeist remake, they aren't likely to match continued strong sales of Universal's Pitch Perfect 2 in its second week.

With most of the new releases not readily available at Redbox, the top of the rental chart looks to be mostly unchanged from the week before, led by Warner's Mad Max: Fury Road.
