Projections: ‘Tooth Fairy’ Sales Won’t Fly Past ‘Avatar’

10 May, 2010 By: Kelly Burner

Modest box office earners came to DVD and Blu-ray Disc May 4. Leading the group with the highest box office power was the family comedy Tooth Fairy from Fox, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson ($59.6 million). Trailing with $26 million in box office revenue was Universal’s romantic comedy Leap Year, starring Amy Adams. And rounding out the group was last year’s Oscar-nominated musical Nine ($19.7 million box office) from Sony Pictures, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz and Nicole Kidman.

Tooth Fairy is likely to make the biggest impression out of the group of new releases, snaring No. 1 on the national top rentals’ chart. However, it is unlikely to have the chops to knock the theatrical behemoth Avatar from the top of the sales charts. Fox’s Avatar should hold onto the No. 1 spot on the overall top sellers and Blu-ray Disc sales charts for a third consecutive week.
