Projections: ‘Resident Evil’ Unleashes Fury

3 Jan, 2011 By: John Latchem

Being the biggest post-Christmas disc release, the latest “Resident Evil” film, Afterlife, looks poised to top the sales and rental charts its first week in stores. The film grossed $60.1 million in domestic theaters, the strongest performer of the action-horror franchise.

Its stiffest challenge will be holdovers such as the strong-selling animated hit Despicable Me, and other recent releases such as Salt and Easy A.

Also in the hunt is new release The American, a modest box office performer with $35.6 million to its credit. Despite a lower-profile disc release than Afterlife, The American could find its way into the top five on the sales chart.
