Projections: ‘Potter’ to Rule the School

14 Dec, 2009 By: Kelly Burner

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter fans, rejoice! The sixth film in the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was released onto DVD and Blu-ray Disc by Warner Dec. 8. The film is the second-highest-grossing title for 2009, raking in more than $300 million in the United States and more than $900 million worldwide. Released just in time for the holidays, Half-Blood Prince is poised to sweep into first place while making record-breaking sales for the week ending Dec. 13.

Also released Dec. 8 was Universal’s mafia crime drama Public Enemies ($97 million), starring screen favorites Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. Although Harry Potter will surely dominate the sales charts for the week, there is the possibility that Public Enemies will steal first place in the rental market.

Other notable titles for the week include Sony Pictures’ comedy Julie & Julia ($94 million), starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams and the fifth season of Disney’s hit series Lost.
