Projections: ‘New Moon’ to Rise to the Top

22 Mar, 2010 By: Kelly Burner

Some big new releases should animate disc sales and rentals the week ending March 21.

Leading the group with the highest box office gross is Summit’s New Moon ($296 million), the sequel to the vampire romance Twilight. Since it was released on March 20 instead of March 16 with the other titles in the group, New Moon will have to overcome a late start to take the top spot.

Next in line is Disney’s animated The Princess and the Frog ($104 million).

Other theatricals released on DVD March 16 include Warner’s actioner Ninja Assassin ($38 million) and Universal’s sci-fi thriller The Fourth Kind ($25.5 million), starring Milla Jovovich of "Resident Evil"-fame. Sony Pictures has the romantic comedy Did You Hear About the Morgans? ($29.6 million), starring genre-favorites Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker, and the heist thriller Armored ($16 million). Summit also has the CG-animated Astro Boy ($19.6 million).

Of the group, the winner should be New Moon. Although it is being released on Saturday rather than the customary Tuesday, its rabid fan base will still likely push it to No. 1 on the top selling DVD and Blu-ray Disc charts, while sliding into No. 2 on the top rentals chart, with the top rental being The Princess and the Frog
