Projections: ‘Machete’ Takes On ‘Schmucks’

10 Jan, 2011 By: John Latchem

A smattering of new titles in a relatively light first week of the new year looks to take down Resident Evil: Afterlife for the top sales spot the week ending Jan. 9.

The strongest candidates are director Robert Rodriguez’s grindhouse throwback Machete, which grossed $26.6 million in theaters but should have a strong cult appeal; and Paramount’s Dinner for Schmucks, a comedy that grossed $73 million.

Since it’s the biggest title not to have a 28-day rental window, Dinner for Schmucks is the strongest contender for the top spot on the next rental chart.
