Projections: ‘Kick-Ass’ Should Beat ‘Wimpy Kid’

9 Aug, 2010 By: Kelly Burner

A number of mid-level box office new releases came out Aug. 3. From Fox came the comedy Diary of a Wimpy Kid ($64 million), based on the bestselling book series of the same name. From Lionsgate came the superhero comedy Kick-Ass ($48 million), about a comic book nerd who decides to become a superhero.

Between the two closely-matched comedies, Kick-Ass will likely rise to the occasion to become the most ass-kicking new release of the week, landing first place on the top sales and rentals charts. Diary of a Wimpy Kid should land at No. 3, just behind last week’s champion, Warner’s Clash of the Titans.

Also released Aug. 3 was Summit’s political thriller The Ghost Writer ($15.5 million), directed by Roman Polanski and starring Pierce Brosnan and Ewan McGregor. Lastly, Sony Pictures came out with the drama To Save a Life, which raked in $3.8 million in theaters.
