Projections: ‘Holmes’ and ‘Alvin’ Battle for Top Spots

5 Apr, 2010 By: Kelly Burner

Two massive blockbusters, representing total box office power of more than $400 million, exploded onto DVD and Blu-ray Disc March 30.

From Fox came the sequel to 2007’s blockbuster Alvin and the Chipmunks, this time introducing Christina Applegate and Anna Faris as the voices of the “Chipettes.” Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel raked in nearly $220 million in domestic theaters.

Also released March 30 was director Guy Ritchie’s action version of Sherlock Holmes from Warner, starring Robert Downey Jr. in the title role, which earned more than $208 million in the box office.

The battle between the two titles will be close. Alvin should be the top disc seller for the week, but Holmes is likely to grab both the top Blu-ray seller position and the top rental spot for the week ending April 4.

Summit Entertainment’s hit vampire film The Twilight Saga: New Moon should fare well in its third week on shelves, taking the No. 3 spot on both the sales and rental charts.

Other new releases March 30 include Sony Pictures’ Oscar nominated An Education ($12.5 million) and Warner’s Imax Under the Sea ($21.2 million).
