Projections: ‘Avatar’ Should Win Top Spots

26 Apr, 2010 By: Kelly Burner

After a relative lull in new releases, the week ending April 25 saw the release of the biggest blockbuster of all time. With $745 million in domestic box office receipts (more than $2.7 billion worldwide), James Cameron’s sci-fi adventure Avatar from Fox will undoubtedly set revenue records on packaged media, just as it has in theaters, easily snagging a triple victory as the No. 1 DVD seller and rental, and the No. 1 Blu-ray seller for the week.

Also released during the week was Fox’s Crazy Heart, a drama about a country singer down on his luck which earned $39 million in domestic theaters and an Oscar for Jeff Bridges, and Paramount’s The Lovely Bones ($44 million), a movie based on a bestselling novel and starring Rachel Weisz and Mark Wahlberg. Lastly, Sony Pictures released the historical drama The Young Victoria ($10 million), a biopic about the eponymous queen of England.
