Walt Disney Studios’ The Last Song, a drama starring Miley Cyrus that earned $62.9 million at the box office, topped the national home video sales charts its first week in stores, but failed to topple 20th Century Fox’s Date Night from repeating atop the rental chart.
The Last Song, about a rebellious girl who is sent to a Southern beach town for the summer to reconnect, through music, with her father, debuted at No. 1 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and the research house’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart for the week ending Aug. 22.
Paramount’s season-four set of “Dexter” bowed at No. 2 on both sales charts, with the fourth season of the quirky TV series selling 54% as many DVDs and 76% as many Blu-ray Discs as Last Song during the week.
Date Night, which had debuted at No. 1 on both sales charts the previous week, slipped to No. 3 on First Alert and No. 5 on the Blu-ray Disc chart, behind Warner’s Clash of the Titans at No. 3 and Lionsgate’s Kick-Ass at No. 4.
None of the top sellers sold particularly well on Blu-ray. Just 10% of total Last Song units sold were on the high-definition format, while for “Dexter” the percentage was 14% and for Date Night, the week-two percentage stood at 16%.
Furry Vengeance, a family comedy from Summit Entertainment that earned $17.6 million in U.S. theaters, debuted at No. 4 on both First Alert and Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week. On the rental chart, Furry Vengeance finished just behind Sony Pictures’ Death at a Funeral, which was the country’s No. 3 rental its second week in stores.
