Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s Dec. 16 release of Mamma Mia! The Movie on Blu-ray Disc and standard DVD sold more than 2.25 million units, generating more than $30 million in first-day revenue, according to the studio.
The studio heavily marketed the film as a holiday gift with frequent spots on Lifetime Network, network television and online.
Based on the popular musical “Mamma Mia!” with songs from Swedish pop act ABBA, the title recently earned two Golden Globe nominations, for best picture (musical or comedy) and best actress (musical or comedy) for Meryl Streep.
The title has generated more than $143 million at the box office since its July 18 theatrical release.
Last month, Mamma Mia! The Movie became the fastest-selling DVD ever in the United Kingdom with 1.6 million units sold Nov. 24, surpassing by more than 500,000 units 10-year record holder Titanic. It sold 3.2 million units in the first week.
The title also set packaged media sales records in Australia and Germany, the latter selling 1.2 million units in the first week.
“Spectacular star power … and the unforgettable music has made Mamma Mia! The Movie the must-see film event of the year,” said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures Digital Platform.
