‘Madea’ Is Top Disc Seller; ‘Rio’ Tops Rentals, BD Sales

Lionsgate has once again topped the national home video sales chart with a film from Tyler Perry. This time it’s Madea’s Big Happy Family, an urban comedy that earned $53.4 million in theaters. The result puts an end to Rio’s four-week reign atop the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart.

The animated film from 20th Century Home Entertainment, with a $143.6 million theatrical take, slipped to No. 3 its fifth week in release, right behind another Fox release, season three of the TV show “Sons of Anarchy,” which debuted at No. 2 the week ended Sept. 4.

Rio remained at No. 1 on Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart and also took the top spot on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart now that its 28-day holdback from Netflix and Redbox is over.

Madea’s Big Happy Family debuted at No. 2 on the rental chart and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, even though it generated just 9% of its unit sales from Blu-ray.

Sons of Anarchy: Season Three was the week’s No. 2 Blu-ray Disc seller, with 17% of unit sales from Blu-ray. Rio generated 33% of its week-five sales from the high-definition format.
