'Mad Max: Fury Road' Drives to Top of Disc Sales Charts9 Sep, 2015 By: Thomas K. Arnold
Warner's Mad Max: Fury Road easily topped the national home video sales charts its first week in stores, debuting at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart the week ended Sept. 6.
The theatrical blockbuster, the fourth film in the post-apocalyptic “Mad Max” franchise that began in 1979, has Tom Hardy taking over from Mel Gibson as the title character and day-saving hero. With fellow headliner Charlize Theron, the film generated a domestic box office gross of more than $153 million and spawned a much-ballyhooed video game, released this month.
Fury Road bumped Anchor Bay’s The Walking Dead: The Complete Fifth Season down to No. 3, while DreamWorks Animation’s Home, distributed by 20th Century Fox, popped back up to No. 2 after falling from No. 1 to No. 3 the prior week.
Nothing could match Fury Road's sales prowess, however, as the title outsold second-ranked Home by nearly a 10-to-1 margin. Of the film’s total unit sales, 56% came from Blu-ray Disc.
Rounding out the top five on the overall disc sales chart were Paw Patrol: Meet Everest!, a budget-priced kidvid, which debuted at No. 4, and Sony Pictures’ Aloha, which slipped to No. 5 after bowing at No. 2 the previous week.
On Nielsen’s Blu-ray Disc sales chart, Fury Road in the top spot was followed Home at No. 2 and the Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection at No. 3.
Rounding out the top five are two collections: the Mad Max Anthology from Warner and Star Wars: The Original Trilogy from 20th Century Fox.
On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, there isn’t much of a change at the top: Home, Aloha and Warner’s Hot Pursuit once again occuped the top three spots for the week.
Warner’s Get Hard moved back up to No. 4, ceding its No. 5 spot to 20th Century Fox’s True Story, which just came off a month-long holdback from Redbox.
