'Jungle Book' Swings to Top of Disc Sales7 Sep, 2016 By: Thomas K. Arnold
Two high-profile new theatrical releases shot to the top of the national home video sales charts their first week in stores, led by Walt Disney Studios’ live-action The Jungle Book, a live-action/CGI remake of Disney’s 1967 animated classic that grossed an impressive $363.9 million in U.S. theaters (and nearly $965 million worldwide).
The film topped both the NPD VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined Blu-ray Disc and DVD unit sales, as well as the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart the week ended Sept. 4.
Bowing at No. 2 on the overall disc sales chart was Warner’s Me Before You, a romantic drama with a $56.2 million domestic gross starring "Games of Thrones” heroine Emilia Clarke. On the Blu-ray Disc chart, the film could muster only a No. 4 debut, owing in part to the fact that just 30% of total unit sales came from Blu-ray (compared to 63% for “The Jungle Book).
On the overall disc chart, the arrival of the new releases bumped the prior week’s top sellers, Universal Pictures’ The Huntsman: Winter’s War and Sony Pictures’ The Angry Birds Movie, to No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. On the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, Huntsman finished the week at No. 2 and Angry Birds was No. 3.
Rounding out the top five, on both charts, was Warner’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which has remained in the top five since its mid-July release.
On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, Universal Pictures’ The Boss remained at No. 1 for the second consecutive week, with The Jungle Book bowing at No. 2.
That bumped Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to No. 3 and The Angry Birds Movie to No. 4.
Rounding out the top five was the Warner comedy Keanu, newly available at Redbox after a 28-day holdback.
