'Insurgent' Surges to No. 1 on Home Video Charts12 Aug, 2015 By: Thomas K. Arnold
Lionsgate's teen-centric dystopian thriller Insurgent scored big on the home video charts the week ended Aug. 9. The sequel to last year's Divergent debuted in the No. 1 spot on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, as well as the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart and the national rental chart.
Insurgent, which stars Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet, grossed $130.2 million in U.S. theaters, just slightly less than the $150.9 million of Divergent. It was released two weeks earlier on Digital HD, the industry term for “electronic sellthrough,” or EST. Insurgent bumped the prior week’s top seller, DreamWorks Animation’s Home, to the No. 2 spot, also on both the First Alert and Blu-ray charts.
The No. 3 spot on both charts went to a two-pack of Insurgent and Divergent available exclusively at Walmart, the country’s No. 1 disc retailer.
Walt Disney Studios’ Descendants, a live-action musical fantasy TV movie inspired by the Disney animated classics, was No. 4 on the overall disc sales chart, with the No. 5 spot going to another new release, Do You Believe?, a religious drama with a cast of big stars — including Lee Majors, Mira Sorvino, Sean Astin and Brian Bosworth — from Pure Flix Entertainment, distributed by Cinedigm
Insurgent generated 53% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, compared with just 31% for Do You Believe? The high-definition disc format accounted for 36% of second-week sales for Home, down from 43% a week ago.
On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, Insurgent easily took the top spot, bumping Warner’s Get Hard to No. 2 and Sony Pictures’ Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 to No. 3.
Fox’s Unfinished Business rose to No. 4 (from No. 5 the previous week), while Warner’s Focus was No. 5 (up from No. 7).
