'Despicable Me 3' Debuts at No. 1 on Disc Sales Charts

Universal Pictures’ Despicable Me 3 easily debuted at No. 1 on the NPD VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart the week ended Dec. 9.

The animated hit earned $264.6 million at the domestic box office.

American Assassin, distributed by Lionsgate, debuted at No. 2 on both charts after a $36 million run at in U.S. theaters. The action-thriller sold about one-fifth the number of copies as Despicable Me 3.

On the overall chart, Disney's Cars 3 moved up a spot to No. 3, followed by Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Homecoming at No. 4 and the Warner Christmas catalog title Elf at No. 5.

On the dedicated Blu-ray chart, Spider-Man: Homecoming was No. 3, followed by Cars 3 at No. 4 and Lionsgate's The Hitman's Bodyguard at No. 5. (Hitman's Bodyguard was No. 6 overall.)

Blu-ray Disc accounted for 62% of Despicable Me 3 unit sales and 56% of American Assassin sales.

On Home Media Magazine's rental chart for the week ended Dec. 10, American Assassin debuted in the top spot, followed by Universal’s Logan Lucky, which arrived in Redbox kiosks after a one-week delay.

The previous week's top rental, Universal's Kidnap, slipped to No. 3, followed by two more Lionsgate titles: The Hitman's Bodyguard and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
