The animated film, which grossed $414.3 million in U.S. theaters, was an easy victor on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales, outselling its nearest competitor, the HBO miniseries The Pacific, also a new release, by a margin of nearly 10-to-1.

DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon, from Paramount Home Entertainment, finished at No. 3 in its fourth week of release, a slight drop from No. 2 the previous week, while Warner’s Sex and the City 2, the previous week’s top seller, slipped to No. 4.

Rounding out the top five was 20th Century Fox’s 45th anniversary edition of The Sound of Music, never before available on Blu-ray Disc.
Toy Story 3 also finished first on Nielsen VideoScan’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart, generating 33% of its first-week sales from the high-definition version. Sound of Music finished second, with virtually all of its sales during the past week coming from the newly issued anniversary Blu-ray Disc release, which is available in several configurations, including a well-appointed gift set.

As Disney is one of the few studios to make available product to Netflix and Redbox right out of the gate, Toy Story 3 also debuted at No. 1 on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week. Sony Pictures’ The Karate Kid shot up the chart from No. 6 to No. 2 now that its 28-day rental window at Netflix has ended.

How to Train Your Dragon, the previous week’s top renter, slipped to No. 3.
