‘Toy Story 3’ Outplays ‘Grown Ups’

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s Toy Story 3 remained the top-selling DVD and Blu-ray Disc the week ended Nov. 14, while the Sony Pictures comedy Grown Ups was the week’s top rental during its first week in stores.

Toy Story 3 was an easy winner on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and the research house’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, although Grown Ups — with $162 million in box office earnings and an all-star cast headed by Adam Sandler, Salma Hayek and David Spade — made a respectable showing on the sales front as well. The film sold nearly 80% as many discs as Toy Story 3 during the week.

On Home Media Magazine’s weekly rental chart, Grown Ups debuted at No. 1, bumping Toy Story 3 to the second position.

Three other new theatrical features with box office takes between $26 million and $32 million made respectable showings their first week in stores. Ramona and Beezus, a family film from 20th Century Fox, debuted at No. 3 on the overall sales chart, followed at No. 4 by the fantasy Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, from Universal Studios.

Another Universal Studios release, the drama Charlie St. Cloud, debuted at No. 8.

Of those three films, Scott Pilgrim performed best on Blu-ray Disc, landing at No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart and generating 51% of its sales from the high-definition format.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, the Warner Western Jonah Hex finished at No. 3, right after Grown Ups and Toy Story 3, as its 28-day rental delay at Netflix and Redbox expired.

Ramona and Beezus, Charlie St. Cloud and Scott Pilgrim debuted at No. 13, 14 and 15, respectively. They are all top five titles at Blockbuster and independent video rental stores but are not yet available at Netflix or Redbox.
