‘Madagascar’ Moves to No.112 Feb, 2009 By: Thomas K. Arnold
The DreamWorks sequel Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa easily captured the top spot on the national home video sales chart the week ended Feb. 8, and according to distributor Paramount Home Entertainment, more than half the sales volume came from premium-priced product such as the “Move It! Move It!” two-pack and the Blu-ray Disc version.
Sales were so strong that the title, a Friday release that topped the chart with just two days of sales, sold more copies than any other home video release so far this year.
Walt Disney Studios’ Space Buddies, the latest direct-to-video entry in the “Air Bud” franchise, debuted at No. 2 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, moving about half as many units as Madagascar in its various configurations.
On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, high purchase demand kept Madagascar from the top spot, with the Sony Pictures thriller Lakeview Terrace remaining at No. 1 for the second consecutive week.
Madagascar made a respectable showing in rental stores nonetheless, debuting as the week’s No. 2 renter and generating approximately 92% the rental activity as Lakeview Terrace.
The 20th Century Fox drama The Secret Life of Bees debuted at No. 3 on both charts, with Zack and Miri Make a Porno, the latest from The Weinstein Co. and distributor Genius Products, bowing at No. 4 on the sales chart and No. 5 on the rental chart, just behind holdover Max Payne, from 20th Century Fox.
Madagascar, which grossed $179.6 million in theaters, also topped the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc sales chart its first week in stores, with Zack and Miri finishing at No. 2 with 64% as many copies selling to consumers.
