‘Kung Fu Panda’ Still Dominates

You can tell Christmas is getting close when four of the five top home video sellers are new releases.

Paramount/DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda easily topped the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart the week ended Nov. 16, although an unusual Sunday street date prompted the title to actually debut on the chart the previous week, based solely on first-day sales.

A two-pack, in which Kung Fu Panda was bundled with the direct-to-video sequel Secrets of the Furious Five, sold well enough to debut at No. 3. Sandwiched between was Universal Studios’ Hellboy II: The Golden Army, a fantasy-action sequel with surprisingly strong home video sales, given its box office take of just $75.8 million.

Warner’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars bowed at No. 4 and Sony Pictures’ This Christmas debuted at No. 5.

The previous week’s top seller, Warner’s Get Smart, slipped to No. 6.

In rental stores, Hellboy II beat Kung Fu Panda to take the No. 1 spot on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart. The previous week’s top renter, Get Smart, finished at No. 3.

Also bowing in the top 10 were This Christmas, at No. 6, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, at No. 8.

On the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc chart, Hellboy II also emerged on top, selling about 40% more copies than second-ranked Kung Fu Panda on the high-definition disc format. Star Wars: The Clone Wars bowed at No. 3.
