‘Alice’ Triumphs Again on Sales Charts16 Jun, 2010 By: Thomas K. Arnold
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s Alice in Wonderland retained the top spot on the national home video sales chart for the second consecutive week, although newcomer Shutter Island, from Paramount, gave the live-action fantasy a serious challenge.
Shutter Island, a Martin Scorsese-directed thriller that generated $128 million in theaters, debuted at No. 2 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, in each case selling more than 80% as many units as Alice.
Shutter Island also bowed at No. 2 on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week ended June 13, its rental demand exceeded only by fellow new release From Paris With Love, an actioner from Lionsgate that grossed $24 million at the box office.
Universal Studios’ The Wolfman, the previous week’s top rental, slipped to No. 3, although rental demand was off just 17%.
Shutter Island generated 27% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc, while for From Paris With Love the percentage was slightly higher, 28%. Alice also generated 28% of its week-two sales from Blu-ray Disc.
In a week when new DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases were conspicuously sparse, only one other newcomer made the First Alert Top 20: HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Seventh Season, which bowed at No. 12.
