Technicolor is consolidating its six digital media services locations in the Los Angeles area under one roof in a new building in Burbank, putting its 250-plus employees close to some of Technicolor’s biggest clients, including Disney, Warner Bros. and DreamWorks Animation.
Construction on the 20,000-square-foot purpose-built facility is expected to finish in October, and will house all of Technicolor’s digital services, including encoding, transcoding, subtitling, tape-to-file conversion, audio and quality control, editing, metadata transformation, DVD and Blu-ray Disc compression and authoring services.
All of Technicolor’s post-production and other L.A. facilities are not part of the consolidation.
“The reason for the consolidation is to simplify the processes we have in our media services business,” said Tim Sarnoff, president of production services at Technicolor. “We’re making significant investments in our media services business worldwide to provide our clients with a more efficient and holistic approach to the production ecosystem.”
“Having everyone in one building allows us to better service a production, rather than have it go out to six individual locations,” he added. “It’ll be easy to encode and transcode, then get to closed captioning; it’ll be easy to get to taped file conversion and editing. We’re trying to make sure that whatever you need to do to [with] your product, you can do it in that building.”
The move is part of a worldwide company investment in its digital media services business, which started with a repurposing of Technicolor’s Pinewood Studios location outside of London earlier this year, turning it from a film lab into the company’s European digital media hub. Technicolor upgraded the facility to host a 10-gigabyte data-transfer pipe, allowing for more efficient processing and distribution of elements.
“This is all part of a larger move we’re doing with in-production services that consolidates our visual effects, animation, commercial business, sound and digital distribution businesses under one umbrella,” Sarnoff said.
In other Technicolor news, the company announced Hewlett-Packard Co. would be the first to have its PC monitors (the HP Envy and HP Pavilion series) undergo Technicolor’s Color Certification program which assures that colors on the screen are pure and accurate.
“With industry leader HP as the first company to have its PC Monitors Technicolor Color Certified, this validates the Technicolor Color Certification program,” said Manuele Wahl, SVP of technology licensing activity for Technicolor. “Technicolor spends hundreds of hours each year to ensure color perfection on movies and we wanted to find a solution that guarantee consumers are seeing the content as the director intended. The color certification program is the vehicle to achieving this goal and will be a differentiator for device manufacturers looking to sell more featured products.”
