Sonic: 1 Million DVDs Manufactured On Demand

13 Dec, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Sonic Solutions and partner Allied Vaughn Dec. 13 said their manufacturing-on-demand (MOD) program has produced more than 1 million custom-ordered discs to consumers.

Notable studio partners include 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and MGM Home Entertainment. MGM plans to release approximately 400 TV shows and movies for on-demand manufacturing over the next 18 months.

MOD technology allows content holders to store digital masters electronically and then burn them on demand to DVD (Blu-ray not available), labeled, placed in a full-color DVD case, packaged and shipped direct to consumer or retailers. The discs are virtually identical to traditional retail DVDs, offering features, compatibility and protection similar to mass-produced discs.

“MOD provides content owners and entertainment distributors with an efficient production system that always matches inventory with demand,” said Doug Olzenak, president of Allied Vaughn. “Integrating MOD into the sales and production supply chains helps improve efficiency, while increasing customer satisfaction and sales.”

Mark Ely, president of strategy with Sonic, said plans include offering MOD distribution to kiosk vendors and by-mail platforms.

“We look forward to providing more content owners and distributors with an efficient inventory management system for delivering content,” Ely said.
