Redbox Doubling Loyalty Program Points in December

Campaign cuts by 50% the number of transactions required to earn free rentals

Redbox Nov. 18 announced it would award double the points for movie rentals in December for Play Pass members; thereby cutting in half the number of transactions required to earn a free rental.

The free Play Pass loyalty program that began in October will award 20 points instead of the usual 10 for each movie or game members rent. When they reach 100 points, they get a credit good for a one-day movie rental. There’s no limit to the number of credits that can be earned.

Consumers joining Play Pass get a free movie night on their birthday and Play Pass anniversaries, among other incentives. For a limited time, consumers receive a free one-night DVD rental just for signing up for Play Pass.

The promotion, which is designed to underscore disc rentals during the winter retail holidays, comes as Redbox saw a 14% decline in the number of kiosk transactions during its most recent fiscal quarter.

“December will be a great month for family entertainment at Redbox,” Mike Wokosin, VP of digital marketing, said in a statement.

At the end of the quarter, Redbox tallied 36 million email subscribers, 26 million app downloads and 5.4 million SMS subscribers.
