Redbox Rents Billionth DVD6 Sep, 2010 By: Chris Tribbey
Kiosk operator Redbox passed the 1 billion DVD rental mark Sept. 5 and is celebrating the milestone with free rentals for the rest of the month.
A DVD of Warner Home Video's Clash of the Titans in Tampa, Fla., was the 1 billionth rental, Redbox said. The kiosks first debuted in Denver in 2004.
“One billion rentals is an incredible milestone as Redbox has quickly become the local video store for millions of consumers nationwide,” said Redbox president Mitch Lowe. “Our popularity is a testament to our consumers’ loyalty and our steadfast commitment to making movie rentals affordable and convenient for our consumers.”
To celebrate the milestone, Redbox is giving customers a free one-night rental at redbox.com/thanks, via a promotional code found on DVD rentals. Redbox customers can also enter a contest where the grand prize is a choice between a trip to the People's Choice Awards or a Sony home entertainment system. The contest ends Sept. 30.
