Projections: Make Way for 'Angry Birds'22 Aug, 2016 By: John Latchem
Sony Pictures' The Angry Birds Movie should easily debut at No. 1 on the home video sales charts the week ending Aug. 21, following several weeks of low-impact new releases barely making a dent.
The animated film, based on the mobile video game app, grossed a healthy $107.4 million at the domestic box office. But its biggest advantage is that there haven't been any barnburners to hit shelves in recent weeks, allowing Warner's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to top disc sales for the past four weeks.
The other big title the week is Universal's faith-based God's Not Dead 2, which earned $20.8 million domestically, about a third of its predecessor's total.
On the rental chart, Batman v Superman comes off its 28-day holdback from Redbox kiosks and should move to No. 1, with Angry Birds bowing at No. 2.
