Projections: Buyers to Abduct ‘District 9’

28 Dec, 2009 By: Kelly Burner

Just three days before Christmas, the studios were still busting out the blockbusters.

On Dec. 22 Sony Pictures released Peter Jackson’s sci-fi epic District 9, which grossed $115 million in domestic theaters. Fox also came out with two romantic comedies with mid-range box office grosses: (500) Days of Summer, starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt ($32.4 million), and All About Steve, starring Sandra Bullock and Thomas Haden Church ($33.9 million).

The most explosive new release for the week is clearly District 9. A viral marketing campaign coupled with the prestige of Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson ought to push this title to the top of the DVD and Blu-ray seller charts for the week ending Dec. 27. However, it should be a different story in the rental market, with The Hangover hanging onto No. 1 for a second week running.

As for Fox’s two new romantic comedies, each should find a respectable place within the top 10 sellers and renters for the week.
