Projection: 'Frost/Nixon' Next Week's Top Seller24 Apr, 2009 By: Kelly Burner
Each of the three major titles of the week (The Wrestler, Notorious and Frost/Nixon) appeals to a slightly different section of the market.
Multiple award winner The Wrestler, the latest picture from indie director Darren Aronofsky of Requiem for a Dream-fame, is poised to deliver a bodyslam in the rental market.
Notorious ($36.8 million), the biopic about legendary Brooklyn rapper Notorious B.I.G. produced by Sean “Diddy” Combs, has to compete with Ron Howard’s highly-acclaimed docudrama Frost/Nixon ($18.6 million). Although these titles appeal to very different demographics, both of them nonetheless cater mostly to the sellthrough market, since their respective consumer bases have likely already seen the pictures during their theatrical run. The victor will be the title that earned more consumer loyalty from its theatrical showing, which seems at this point to be Frost/Nixon.
