EMA’s Independent Dealers of Entertainment Association (iDEA) has hit 200 recommended independent DVD titles as part of its monthly Hidden Gems program. The program has taken place over the past 30 months and alerts video retailers to promising new independent releases.
“We started this program two-and-a-half years ago in response to the need for objective advice on independent video product,” said Jim Loperfido, owner of Emerald City Video in Auburn, N.Y., and chairman of iDEA when the program launched. “The program was rapidly and enthusiastically embraced by both the independent video retailer and supplier communities and has become one of iDEA’s most popular programs.”
A five-judge panel rates titles on the basis of wide appeal, attention-grabbing box art, content and overall presentation. Participating suppliers include Allumination FilmWorks, Anchor Bay Entertainment, Arts Alliance America, City Lights Media Group, Echo Bridge Home Entertainment, Entertainment Studios, First Look Studios, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Genius Products, Image Entertainment, Liberation Entertainment, Lightyear Video, Lionsgate, Magnolia Home Entertainment, Monterey Media, MTI Home Video, New Line Home Video, Oscilloscope Laboratories, Peace Arch Home Entertainment, Screen Media Films, ThinkFilm, Vivendi Home Entertainment, Wolfe Video, Xenon Pictures and Zeitgeist Films.

Titles recently selected that are streeting in March include Screen Media’s Lake City (March 3), Magnolia’s Let the Right One In (March 10) and Special (March 31), City Lights’ Gardens of the Night (March 24), Anchor Bay’s Walled In (March 17) and Crowley (March 10), and Fox’s Nobel Son (street date TBA).
