Turning away from the typical awards season trend of honoring smaller-profile pictures, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Jan. 17 doled out its Golden Globe trophies to a surprising selection of audience-favorite films. In a majority of categories, the top prize went to the film that also happened to be the highest box office earner among the respective selections.
For example, the top grossing film of 2009, Fox’s Avatar, took best drama film and best director for James Cameron.
Only a handful of winners, however, are currently available on home video.
Best comedy/musical film went to The Hangover, available on DVD and Blu-ray from Warner Home Video. Best actress in a comedy/musical went to Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia (Sony Pictures); best supporting actor in a film went to Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds, and Disney’s Up won for best animated film and best musical score. All three are available on disc.
Precious, winner in the best supporting actress category for Mo’Nique, will be released on DVD and Blu-ray March 9 by Lionsgate.
Audiences seeking to check out the TV category winners on DVD are in better luck.
“Mad Men,” available on DVD and Blu-ray from Lionsgate (the third season hits shelves March 23), won best TV drama. “Glee,” for which 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment already released the first half of the first season, won for best comedy series.
Showtime’s “Dexter,” distributed on DVD and Blu-ray by Paramount Home Entertainment and CBS, won best drama actor for Michael C. Hall and best supporting actor for John Lithgow. The fourth season of the show for which they won, however, has yet to be released on home video.
Another Showtime series, “United States of Tara,” on DVD from Paramount and CBS, won best comedy actress for Toni Collette’s portrayal of a housewife with multiple personalities.
Alec Baldwin won another best comedy actor award for “30 Rock,” available on DVD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
HBO picked up four Globes in the TV acting categories. The acclaimed Grey Gardens won for best TV movie and best actress for Drew Barrymore; Kevin Bacon won best actor in a TV movie for Taking Chance; and Chloe Sevigny won best supporting actress for the third season of “Big Love.” All three titles are available on DVD from HBO Home Entertainment.
Seeking to tie into the timing of the Golden Globes, the Warner Archive manufacture-on-demand library through Jan. 31 is offering 35% off a selection of past winners on DVD. More details are available at http://www.wbshop.com/Warner-Archive/ARCHIVE,default,sc.html.
