DisplaySearch: Tablet Shipments to Increase 200% in 2011

7 Feb, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey

Shipments of tablets are projected to grow nearly 200% in 2011 from 2010, according to a forecast from DisplaySearch.

The research film credits the number of iPad competitors for the large jump in expected tablet shipments.

More than 55.7 million tablets will be shipped this year, with that number hitting 172.4 million by 2014, DisplaySearch estimates.

“The upcoming product announcements, introductions and demonstrations in the coming weeks will build on the tremendous momentum that the market has already seen and will lead to segmentation in the tablet PC market,” said Richard Shim, mobile computing analyst for DisplaySearch. “This segmentation translates to significant shipment growth and proliferation in the short- and long-term.”

Shim said tablets will remain popular for the foreseeable future, but the aspect ratio of 4:3 — established by Apple with its 2010 iPad release — may fluctuate, with notebooks and HDTVs mostly sticking with 16:9.
