HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — According to Devolved director and writer John Cregan, the March 22 release of his first feature film will be Severin Films’ best Blu-ray Disc ever.
Not because it stars Lindsey Shaw, co-star of ABC Family's “Pretty Little Liars” and “10 Things I Hate About You,” or “Saturday Night Live” favorite Chris Kattan. Not because of a hilarious script, or its fun spoof take on “Lost” and Lord of the Flies.
When Cregan says best for this MPI Home Video-distributed Blu-ray, he means digitally.
“We shot it with the RED digital camera, and the Blu-ray is encoded with the highest bit rate ever for Severin,” he said March 4 before a screening of the film. “If you’ve got a Blu-ray player, I highly recommended it.”
MPI and Severin are giving Devolved both a DVD ($24.98) Blu-ray ($29.98) release, giving non-Blu-ray player owners access as well. This throwback comedy sees a group of suburban high school seniors on a whale-watching trip near San Diego, shipwrecked off the Baja coast of Mexico. Quickly the situation devolves, as the teens split between the high school elite, and those who want to put the idea of high school far behind them. Can they survive the island — and each other — long enough to escape?
The two commentaries — one with actors Gary Entin, Lindsey Shaw, and Robert Adamson, the other featuring Cregan — included in the bonus features are “great companion piece(s)” to the film, and expressed pride for his two early teen-themed shorts included: Live Tomorrow Today! and Restive Planet.
The audition footage included in the bonuses also will be a treat for fans of the film, Cregan said, since it shows stars auditioning for other parts they ended up not getting. Music videos, a trailer, deleted scenes and “Devolved: Behind the Scenes” are also included.
The film co-stars Robert Adamson (“Lincoln Heights”) and features an original soundtrack with songs from Nik Freitas, Sleep Station and Charlyne Yi.
