DEG Japan Picks Top Blu-rays19 Mar, 2010 By: Chris Tribbey
The No. 1 Blu-ray Disc of 2009 in Japan was Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea from Walt Disney Studio Home Entertainment, DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group Japan announced March 19.
A team of audio and visual critics, DVD magazine editors and hardware manufacturer representatives from the DEG determined the awards for the best Blu-rays in Japan.
“Not only the image quality, but its music and sound quality and bonus material are stunning,” the judges’ comments for Ponyo read. “Made in Japan Animation with its commitment to Blu-ray quality justifies its acclaim as the 2009 Blu-ray title of the year.”
Braveheart earned the best live-action picture quality award, while two titles — Eizoshi Satoyama and Healing Islands Okinawa — won for best picture quality for a documentary. Monsters, Inc. was the No. 1 animation for picture quality.
In the sound category, Wall-E won for best movie.
The top restoration went to Tora! Tora! Tora!, while Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser earned an award for the best BD Live features.
The Seven Samurai and Tsurugidake Tennoki earned special recognition awards.
