BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Maya Entertainment’s Sandra Avila has a suggestion for people who see the studio’s new movie One Hot Summer.

“Make yourself a mojito. You’ll need it to cool down,” she said.

Starring Vanessa Marcil (“Without A Trace,” “Lipstick Jungle”) and Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers), the novel-based film follows a successful Cuban woman who has the perfect married life in Miami. But when her first love, a smoking hot white boyfriend from college, arrives in town with the express purpose of stealing her back, her perfect life gets turned upside down.

The film debuted on Lifetime Movie Network July 26, and Maya is looking at a first-quarter date for the DVD release.

“It’s hot, it’s sexy, and who doesn’t need a little bit of both every day?” said actress Jacqueline Piñol.

Director Betty Kaplan discovered the book, by author Carolina Garcia-Aguilera, after inquiring about producing a series based on Garcia-Aguilera’s popular, award-winning Lupe Solano mysteries (“Havana Heat,” “Bitter Sugar”).

“Everyone in this film is amazing,” Kaplan said. “A lot of work went into making this film, by everyone involved. It was one of those rare collaborations where the people who wanted to make the film got to see it through.”

Avila said the film offers an “actual representation of strong Latinas,” with a lead, female character that you end up rooting hard for as the film progresses.

“I’m seeing it for the first time, along with everyone else,” said Garcia-Aguilera, “The movie has wonderful actors and actresses, and they all have amazing resumes.”
