PlayStation 3 Motion Controller Unveiled

The PlayStation 3 motion controller, dubbed PlayStation Move, will be available worldwide this fall, Sony Computer Entertainment said March 10, with 36 game developers and publishers working on content for the system.
Combined with a PlayStation Eye camera, the system offers motion-based, high-definition gaming, with Sony attempting to steal away gamers hooked on the motion-based experiences of the Nintendo Wii.
Much like the Wii remotes, the Move looks like a regular TV remote, with regular buttons along its length, but has a blue orb at the end and a armband to prevent it from being thrown when players use it. Sony said both fast and subtle motions can be detected, with players’ location and angle determined in a 3D space. With the Eye, a player’s voice and image also can be captured.
Pricing for the Move has not been announced, but some media reported an introductory package with the Move, Eye and one game would be priced at less than $100. This year Sony will release more than 20 games dedicated to the system.
“We will continue to work to have a comprehensive portfolio of attractive and innovative games for the motion controller, not only from SCE Worldwide Studios but also from the third-party developers and publishers, whom we have been working closely with,” said Kazuo Hirai, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
Among the first games to be announced is Lord of the Rings: Aragon’s Quest from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It will ship this fall and is based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien and trilogy of films based on those books.
