Sony Bows PlayStation 3 Movie Rental Marathon7 Oct, 2013 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Viewers can vote which new releases should rent for 99 cents
Sony Network Entertainment International Oct. 7 launched a month-long movie marathon whereby PlayStation 3 users can rent new-release and catalog titles for 99 cents each through the video unlimited service and PlayStation store.
Genres include horror through Oct. 13, adventure through Oct. 20, comedy through Oct. 27, thrillers through Nov. 3, fantasy through Nov. 10, and action through Nov. 17.
The rental marathon coincides with the launch Sony Network’s new HLS adaptive bitrate streaming technology for the PS3. The technology claims to offer better streaming video quality by measuring the user's connection speed and serving up the best possible picture quickly, without unwanted skips or pauses during playback.
In addition, the promotion “Theatrical Throwdown” pits two new digital movies head to head on a weekly basis with viewers voting which release they want to see discounted to a 99-cent rental the following weekend. Voting begans Oct. 7 with two horror flicks — The Last Exorcism Part II, starring Ashley Bell, versus Evil Dead, starring Jane Levy. Users can view the contenders and vote via the “Theatrical Throwdown” app on the PlayStation Facebook page.
The Movie Marathon catalog promotion offers a weekly collection of catalog films to rent for 99 cents. Users can check out the weekly listing of rental titles by visiting the Sony Entertainment Network online store or through the PlayStation store.
