Sony Gears Up for 'Boondock Saints II'28 Jan, 2010 By: Chris Tribbey
LOS ANGELES — Steven Bersch, president of Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group, need only look at the original The Boondock Saints film to understand the power of DVD.
The 2000 film garnered a paltry $30,000 on just a handful of box office screens. But its 2009 sequel, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, made more than $10 million, something Bersch attributes to the DVD success of the first film.
“This franchise was discovered on DVD, and we’re the keepers of the flame. It’s truly a function of the strength of the DVD business,” he said during a Jan. 27 event celebrating the second film, where the cast and crew mingled with fans. “The 10th anniversary [of the first film] is timed conveniently to our release of the second. It’s going to be a great DVD and a great Blu-ray, with a lot of stuff for the fans.”
The March 9 DVD ($27.96) and Blu-ray Disc ($34.95) releases of the second film will include deleted scenes, cast and crew commentaries and two lengthy featurettes. The Blu-ray will also feature an “Inside the Vault: The Weapons” featurette, as well as “The Boondock Saints Hit Comic-Con” and “The Cast Confesses: Secrets from the Set.”
“It looks killer,” actor Sean Patrick Flanery said of the Blu-ray. “It only took us a decade to get the sequel out.”
He also pointed out there will be a limited theatrical re-release of the first film in March, timed with the home entertainment releases of the second.
“No one ever got to see it on the big screen,” he said. “I know they’ll be getting my 12 [expletive] bucks to see it.”
